Qantas Airbus A380 flies for two days with work light left in wing

A Qantas Airbus A380 flew for two days carrying hundreds of passengers after a 13-inch battery-operated work light was accidentally left inside the aircraft’s left wing. The incident occurred following air-conditioning maintenance in Sydney on January 7, before the aircraft flew to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

According to the Australian Transportation Safety Board (ATSB), maintenance engineers placed the light inside the wing while replacing an air-conditioning sensor. Although the light was turned off, it was not retrieved. The ATSB noted that the light was missed during subsequent foreign object clearance inspections, and the end-of-shift tool check also failed to identify the missing item. The light was only discovered after the plane returned to Sydney, when an employee reviewing an “unreturned tool report” noticed the discrepancy.

Qantas reported the incident voluntarily and stated that the light had no impact on the flights. In response, the airline has strengthened its tool-control procedures, including the introduction of mandatory pre-clearance checks to ensure all tools are accounted for following maintenance.
