Qantas Flight Diverts to Melbourne After Mid‑Air Mechanical Issue
A Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as Flight QF27 from Sydney to Santiago, Chile, experienced a mechanical problem over the Pacific Ocean near New Zealand. About four and a half hours into the journey, the aircraft turned back and landed in Melbourne around 11 p.m. local time.
The airline placed roughly 200 passengers in hotels overnight, provided meals and alcohol, and announced that the flight would depart again from Melbourne to Santiago the following midday. Engineers are inspecting the Dreamliner to determine the cause of the issue.
