Qantas to accelerate Airbus A380 retirement starting in 2028

Qantas has announced it will accelerate the retirement of its Airbus A380 fleet, beginning the phase-out in 2028. This is four years earlier than the airline’s original schedule, with the full decommissioning of its 10 superjumbo aircraft expected by approximately 2030.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson cited rising maintenance costs and the increased likelihood of operational disruptions as the aircraft age as primary drivers for the decision. The airline plans to replace the A380s with more fuel-efficient, smaller aircraft, specifically the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. These new models are expected to arrive faster than anticipated, allowing the airline to transition its long-haul network toward point-to-point connections rather than relying on massive hub-and-spoke models.

The shift reflects a broader industry trend where airlines prioritize higher flight frequencies and fuel efficiency over the capacity of single, massive aircraft. While the A380 was designed for high-volume routes, the newer aircraft in the Qantas order will allow for additional international connections and improved operational flexibility.
