Qantas to retire Airbus A380 fleet starting in 2028

Qantas has announced it will begin retiring its Airbus A380 fleet in 2028, moving the timeline forward by four years from its original 2032 target. The decision is driven by rising maintenance costs, supply chain challenges for the discontinued aircraft model, and the need to mitigate the impact of high jet fuel prices.

The airline is accelerating a massive fleet renewal program to transition toward more efficient, twin-engine aircraft. Key components include the “Project Sunrise” initiative, which will utilize 12 specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft to launch ultra-long-haul non-stop flights between Australia, London, and New York starting in late 2027.

In addition to the A350s, Qantas is integrating Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 Dreamliners, as well as Airbus A321XLRs, to replace aging A330 fleets and optimize short-to-medium haul routes. The company is also in negotiations with Airbus and Boeing to convert purchase options into firm orders for approximately 20 additional widebody aircraft to secure capacity from 2030 onward. CEO Vanessa Hudson noted that these investments aim to meet surging premium travel demand and improve long-term operating margins.
