Qantas to launch direct Sydney-New York flights in 2028
Qantas has announced plans to launch direct 18-hour flights between Sydney and New York starting in mid-2028. This service, part of the airline’s Project Sunrise initiative, will utilize Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. These specially configured planes will feature wellbeing zones to allow passengers to exercise and access refreshments during the extended journey.
The new route will connect Sydney’s Kingsford-Smith airport directly to New York’s JFK airport, reducing travel time by approximately three hours compared to current routes involving a stopover in Los Angeles. Qantas expects the ultra long-haul routes to generate an additional $400 million in earnings over five years. Ticket sales for the service are scheduled to begin in August 2027.
