Qantas to launch nonstop Sydney-New York flights in 2028

Qantas has announced that its Project Sunrise initiative will include nonstop flights between Sydney and New York starting in mid-2028. The new service is expected to take approximately 18 hours, reducing travel time by more than three hours compared to current one-stop itineraries. Tickets for the service are scheduled to go on sale in August 2027.

The flights will utilize specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, which feature an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank to enable flight durations of up to 22 hours. Qantas plans to take delivery of 12 of these aircraft, with the first expected in April 2027. The cabins will be configured with 238 seats across four classes: First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.

To mitigate the effects of jet lag on passengers, the aircraft will include specialized lighting schemes and a dedicated wellness zone. This New York route follows the previously confirmed Sydney-to-London nonstop service, which is slated to begin in October 2027. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson noted that the expansion responds to growing demand for direct travel between Australia and the United States.
