Qatar accused of dual role as conflict instigator and mediator
An analysis published in the National Post suggests that Qatar’s reputation as a neutral mediator is being undermined by its historical and ongoing ties to Islamist movements. The report argues that Doha has built geopolitical influence by cultivating relationships with groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.
Specific attention is drawn to the late Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a figure who received Qatari citizenship and utilized the Al Jazeera network to reach millions. Al-Qaradawi’s views, which were seen by some as encouraging suicide attacks, led to entry bans in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Following his death in 2022, both Qatari officials and Hamas leaders attended his funeral in Doha.
The critique posits that Qatar acts as both an instigator and a firefighter in global conflicts, maintaining ties with actors who trigger disputes while simultaneously presenting itself as the essential mediator to resolve them. This dual role is described as a strategy to place the nation at the center of profitable diplomatic solutions to serve its own interests.
