Qatar draws 1-1 with Switzerland to earn first World Cup point

At the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage match in Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium, Qatar equalised in injury time to hold Switzerland to a 1‑1 draw. Switzerland took the lead early, with Brill Empolo converting a penalty in the 17th minute after a foul on Enzo Entoi. Qatar pressed for a response, creating several chances and seeing goalkeeper Al Amir Abunanda make a handful of saves. In the fourth minute of added time, Al Amir Abunanda’s teammate Al Amin headed in the equaliser, securing Qatar’s first point of the tournament and a historic milestone for the Arab side.

Switzerland dominated possession, holding the ball roughly 70 % of the match and registering 26 shots, yet they failed to convert any beyond the opening penalty. The match unfolded under intense heat, and both teams will need positive results in their remaining group games to stay in contention for the knockout stage.
