Qatar expands solar capacity to diversify power mix

Qatar is accelerating the deployment of utility-scale solar photovoltaics to diversify its power mix, reduce domestic gas consumption, and lower emissions intensity. According to a report by GlobalData, renewable energy is projected to increase its share of the country’s total power capacity from 12.0% in 2025 to 25.9% by 2035.

Solar PV is expected to be the primary driver of growth, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.4% over the next decade. This expansion is supported by the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy and the development of major facilities including Al Kharsaah, Ras Laffan, Mesaieed, and the Dukhan development.

Despite the solar expansion, natural gas will remain a critical component of the national infrastructure. Gas-fired generation is expected to account for approximately 74% of cumulative capacity in 2035, providing essential reliability for extreme summer cooling loads and thermal energy for seawater desalination through Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) facilities.
