Qatar launches Doha Investment to manage domestic wealth fund portfolio

Qatar is restructuring its sovereign wealth strategy with the launch of Doha Investment, a new division of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) dedicated to managing the nation’s domestic portfolio. Announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York, the platform aims to bolster local companies, deepen capital markets, and drive economic diversification away from hydrocarbons.

Doha Investment will initially oversee approximately 45 state-owned enterprises, representing roughly one-third of QIA’s estimated $580 billion in assets. The portfolio includes major entities such as Qatar Airways Group, QNB Group, Ooredoo Group, and Katara Hospitality. The division will focus on strategic sectors including artificial intelligence, manufacturing, healthcare, and technology to encourage private sector participation.

In tandem with this domestic shift, QIA has entered a $20 billion strategic partnership with JPMorgan Asset Management. This agreement includes a $15 billion mandate for customized global equity portfolios and a $5 billion initiative focused on U.S. private credit, targeting middle-market businesses in sectors like healthcare and technology.

These strategic moves come amid regional economic pressures and discussions regarding energy security and the Strait of Hormuz. While the QIA has historically focused on overseas investments, the creation of Doha Investment marks a consolidated effort to build national champions and attract international expertise to the local economy.
