Qatar LNG carrier GasLog Shanghai struck in Strait of Hormuz, second attack in a month

A Bermuda‑flagged LNG tanker, GasLog Shanghai, carrying Qatari LNG, was hit by a likely Iranian projectile about 11 nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman, on July 31. The strike marks the second confirmed attack on a Qatari LNG cargo within a month. The vessel remained stable, the crew were reported safe, and the ship continued its voyage.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted two tankers attempting the southern corridor under U.S. air escort and forced several others to turn back. Saudi Arabia responded by announcing a 14‑country maritime coalition to protect the Bab el‑Mandeb, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Meanwhile, 22 Chinese‑linked vessels transited the Bab el‑Mandeb without incident during the same period.

The incident has prompted QatarEnergy to extend force‑majeure declarations on its contracts and has driven up insurance premiums for LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global gas supplies.
