Qatar ramps up LNG exports to Europe via Red Sea

Qatar is increasing its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe amid surging prices and dwindling inventories ahead of the winter season. One tanker, reportedly bound for Poland, is making a rare transit through the Red Sea to reach its destination. This route is considered high-risk due to potential attacks from Houthi rebels; UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that an unnamed LNG tanker was approached by a skiff that fired two shots southeast of Al Mukalla, prompting the vessel's security team to return fire.

To navigate regional instability, Qatar has utilized various strategies, including ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman and negotiating passage through the Strait of Hormuz. These efforts have helped QatarEnergy restore LNG exports to approximately one-third of pre-war levels. The increased supply is critical for European customers, such as Poland’s Orlen SA, as the continent faces high energy costs and low fuel reserves.
