Qatar seeks long-term LNG supply agreements with the United States

QatarEnergy is exploring long-term agreements to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from suppliers in the United States. This move aims to secure alternative supplies for international customers following disruptions in the Middle East.

Regional instability, specifically military operations involving the United States and Iran, has made the Strait of Hormuz unsafe for tankers. This has significantly impacted Qatar's ability to export gas, which previously accounted for approximately one-fifth of global LNG supplies. Additionally, the Ras Laffan LNG facility in Qatar sustained damage during an Iranian strike earlier in the conflict, with repairs estimated to take between three and five years.

To maintain its reputation as a reliable supplier, QatarEnergy has already purchased 33 LNG shipments from U.S. producers this year to supply markets in South Korea, Taiwan, Bangladesh, India, and Japan. The state-owned company is currently considering agreements with both existing and under-construction U.S. export projects.
