QatarEnergy suspends LNG supplies to Italy amid Middle East tensions

QatarEnergy has formally suspended all scheduled liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to the Italian energy firm Edison. The suspension is expected to last until early November 2026.

The Qatari state company cited operational disruptions and maritime security risks stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, specifically within the Iranian sphere of influence, as the primary reasons for the decision. This move represents a significant supply shock for Italy, a major consumer of gas within the European Union.

Following the announcement, gas futures on the Dutch TTF and the Italian PSV hubs saw notable increases, reflecting market fears regarding supply shortages ahead of the winter season. While the suspension does not directly affect supply contracts with Spain, the interconnected nature of European gas markets is expected to transmit upward price pressure to the Iberian market (MIBGAS), potentially increasing costs for Spanish energy-intensive industries.
