Space42 and Telespazio Ibérica launch wildfire monitoring in Spain

Space42 subsidiary Mira Aerospace and Telespazio Ibérica have launched a wildfire-monitoring mission in Spain using High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS). The mission utilizes the ApusNeo18 model, a solar-powered platform designed to operate in the stratosphere.

The inaugural flight took off from the Canarias Stratoport on Fuerteventura, remaining airborne for 29 hours and reaching an altitude of approximately 16,000 feet. This flight established two European HAPS records and successfully transmitted real-time, high-resolution video and imagery via electro-optical and infrared sensors.

The project, part of the ISSEC initiative, aims to enhance emergency response by providing persistent monitoring that complements existing satellite and ground data. A multi-flight campaign is scheduled for October, with plans to increase operating altitudes and extend the flight range toward Gran Canaria.
