Qi 50W wireless charging standard set for 2028 rollout

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is developing a new Qi 50W wireless‑charging specification that will double the power of the current Qi2 25W standard. The goal is an open, brand‑agnostic system that can charge smartphones at up to 50 watts, reducing charging times to near‑cable speeds while improving thermal management.

An off‑cycle meeting was held at Xiaomi’s headquarters in Beijing, bringing together engineers and executives from Apple, Google, Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and more than 20 other firms. Participants refined the technical parameters, tested prototype hardware and agreed on a low‑inductance, low‑voltage architecture supplied by Xiaomi. The specification is slated for final publication in 2028, with the first commercial devices expected shortly thereafter.

Separately, Samsung has indicated it aims to launch its own 50 W wireless‑charging capability for future Galaxy phones between 2028 and 2029, aligning its roadmap with the emerging Qi 50W ecosystem.
