Qianzhen Fishing Port 8.1 billion TWD renovation faces scrutiny

The 8.1 billion TWD renovation of the Qianzhen Fishing Port in Kaohsiung has become a focal point of political controversy due to reported infrastructure failures and budget discrepancies. Opposition lawmakers from the Kuomintang and the Taiwan People's Party have criticized the project, noting that an initial 30 million TWD maintenance request escalated into an 8.1 billion TWD modernization plan. Critics highlight several issues, including a 400 million TWD crew center with low occupancy and high costs, a 2.4 billion TWD seafood marketing center struggling to attract vendors, and reports of inadequate shower facilities and corroded mooring posts.

The Kaohsiung District Fishermen's Association has defended the scale of the investment, arguing that the project is a necessary transition from an aging port to a modern international industry platform. They clarified that the 30 million TWD figure referred to routine maintenance, whereas the 8.1 billion TWD covers comprehensive upgrades such as deep-water piers, improved sewage systems, and food safety compliance. While acknowledging the need for oversight regarding construction quality and operational efficiency, the association emphasized that the upgrades are vital for Taiwan's deep-sea fishing industry competitiveness.
