Qin Weizhong under investigation following Shenzhen mayoral resignation

Former Shenzhen Mayor Qin Weizhong has been placed under investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection for “serious violations of discipline and law.” The announcement came less than a month after Qin resigned from his post in August 2026. The Guangdong Provincial Committee held a rare meeting to report on his downfall, signaling the gravity of the case.

The investigation has drawn attention to the political connections between Qin and Ma Xingrui, the former Politburo member and Xinjiang Party Secretary who was expelled from the Communist Party in July 2026. Ma was accused of “power-for-sex and money-for-sex transactions” and large-scale family corruption. Reports suggest that Ma’s tenure in Shenzhen served as a significant period for wealth accumulation, particularly through urban renewal projects.

Allegations have surfaced regarding Ma’s personal life and corruption network, including claims that his family members and mistresses were involved in bribery. Some reports suggest that several of Ma’s associates have been detained by authorities. The downfall of Qin is seen by observers as part of a broader crackdown on political circles in Shenzhen, following the previous arrests of other high-ranking officials such as Guo Yonghang.
