Qing Dynasty history traces the rise and fall of China's last imperial rule

The history of China’s final imperial dynasty, the Qing, is highlighted through the lens of its last emperor, Puyi, and the dynasty's origins in Manchuria. The Qing rule, which lasted approximately three centuries, began when the Jurchen leader Nurhaci unified rival clans to establish the Later Jin dynasty. This foundation relied on the Eight Banners system, a structural framework that integrated military, census, and social identity.

The era of imperial rule concluded in February 1912 when the six-year-old Puyi abdicated the throne. Following the abdication, the Forbidden City served as a psychological and physical enclosure for the imperial household, existing in a state of limbo while the rest of China underwent significant political upheaval, including republicanism and warlordism.
