Ocean Melody cargo ship fire in Qingdao kills 25

A major fire broke out on the Liberian-flagged cargo ship Ocean Melody while it was undergoing maintenance at the Beihai Shipbuilding yard in Qingdao, China. The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 am local time on Thursday.

Official reports indicate that 42 people were on board at the time of the blaze. The death toll has risen to 25, as rescue teams located the bodies of all individuals previously reported missing. Twelve people were successfully evacuated, and five others were hospitalized in stable condition.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang have both responded to the tragedy. President Xi ordered intensified search and rescue operations and a swift investigation into the cause of the fire, emphasizing the need to hold responsible parties accountable. Premier Li called for efforts to prevent secondary disasters and urged for strengthened safety inspections and stricter accountability regarding maritime safety regulations.
