Qingdao hosts Beach Sprint World Rowing Championships
The World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals are taking place in Qingdao, China, from October 18 to 21. This discipline, characterized by sprints from the beach through a buoy course in the sea, is set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
The Austrian Rowing Association (ÖRV) is competing with five boats and six athletes. Notable contenders include Magdalena Lobnig and the U19 mixed double sculls duo Esther Schöberl and Alexander Rittenbacher, both of whom recently won silver at the European Championships. Other Austrian participants include Nikolas Roidmayer, Vincent Schreiber, and Luisa Ömer.
Coastal rowing is described as a high-intensity alternative to traditional rowing, involving unpredictable maritime conditions and physical duels. Two-time Olympic champion Karl Schulze, a pioneer in the sport, noted that while traditional rowing focuses on economy and elegance, coastal rowing is a battle against the elements and requires maximum speed.
