Indonesia digital payments surge as QRIS cross-border transactions grow
Indonesia is experiencing a significant surge in digital payment adoption. Bank Indonesia reported that digital payment transaction volumes reached 6.11 billion in August 2026, a 40.36 percent year-on-year increase. Mobile banking saw a 47.08 percent growth, while internet banking rose by 15.12 percent.
A major driver of this growth is the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). QRIS transactions grew by 67.22 percent year-on-year. The cross-border QRIS (QRIS Antarnegara) system has gained international recognition, receiving the ‘50-in-5 Awards 2026’ for collaboration at the UN General Assembly in New York.
Cross-border data shows strong activity between Indonesia and partner nations including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and China. Between 2022 and July 2026, foreign users in Indonesia completed 21 million QRIS transactions worth Rp5.90 trillion. In contrast, Indonesian users transacting in partner countries recorded 4.67 million transactions totaling Rp1.73 trillion, resulting in a net inbound value of approximately Rp4.17 trillion.
