QRIS digital payment adoption grows in Indonesia

Digital payment adoption via the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) is expanding across various sectors in Indonesia. In West Sumatra, the number of QRIS users reached 1.08 million by the first half of 2026, supported by approximately 754,000 merchants. Bank Indonesia officials noted that this digitalization is a key driver for empowering MSMEs by improving marketing, transaction recording, and access to financing.

In the religious sector, research conducted at the Oman Al-Makmur Mosque in Banda Aceh indicates that perceived ease of use and security significantly influence congregants' interest in using QRIS for religious donations (infak). The study found that security is the most dominant factor in driving the adoption of digital philanthropy, suggesting that technical reliability is more critical for user interest than normative socialization alone.
