Quý Xa iron mine resumes operations in Lao Cai

The Quý Xa iron mine in Lao Cai province has officially resumed operations, marking a significant milestone for Vietnam's steel industry. Managed by the Capital Metal Mining and Processing Joint Stock Company, the mine holds a total estimated reserve of 112 million tons of high-quality ore, considered among the best in Southeast Asia.

The current permitted extraction plan covers over 73 million tons with a maximum capacity of 5 million tons of raw ore per year over a period of approximately 15 years and 8 months. The project aims to supply essential raw materials to the Lao Cai Steel Plant operated by Viet Trung Mineral and Metallurgy Co., Ltd, as well as other domestic steel producers.

Local authorities expect the project to contribute significantly to Lao Cai's GRDP, with potential additions of approximately 1,000 billion VND by 2026. The resumption is intended to enhance domestic material autonomy, stabilize the supply chain, and reduce reliance on imported iron ore.
