Quad9 to withdraw DNS services from France by November 2026

The Swiss foundation Quad9 has announced it will cease providing its DNS resolver services to users in France on November 24, 2026. This decision follows a ruling by the Paris Judicial Court following a request from beIN Sports France.

The court ordered Quad9 to block 58 domain names associated with the illegal broadcasting of WTA tennis matches. Failure to comply would have resulted in daily fines. While the court set the penalty at 1,000 euros per day in total, Quad9 has opted to withdraw from the French market rather than implement the domain blocking.

Quad9 stated that the decision is driven by the potential for future legal actions. The foundation noted that approximately 20 other procedures are currently pending in France against various DNS resolvers, which could lead to the blocking of hundreds of domains and unsustainable cumulative fines. Quad9 maintains that its core mission is to provide privacy, security, and integrity to all internet users without selective filtering.
