Quade Cooper back in Wallabies camp as World Cup comeback remains possible

Former Wallabies fly‑half Quade Cooper, now 38, has rejoined the Australian squad in Osaka ahead of the test against Japan. Although he has no contract for the upcoming season, skipper Harry Wilson said Cooper “can never be written off” for a possible return at the 2026 Rugby World Cup.

Cooper moved into a coaching role with Osaka’s Kintetsu Liners last year, but insists he never retired. He joins veteran playmakers Bernard Foley and James O’Connor in the pool of experienced backs the new coach Les Kiss may consider, though Kiss has not promised any selection. Declan Meredith is set to start at No. 10 against Japan, with other squad members such as Tom Lynagh and Ben Donaldson also in contention.

The camp also features former Australian lock Harry Hockings, now eligible for Japan, highlighting the cross‑national ties in the lead‑up to the World Cup.
