Quaker Oats factory in Iowa suffers explosion and fire
A major fire broke out at a Quaker Oats facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a suspected explosion on Saturday afternoon. Local fire services responded to the scene at approximately 4:45 p.m. local time, reporting thick plumes of black smoke rising over the city.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell confirmed that all employees were successfully evacuated and no injuries have been reported among staff or firefighters. The fire affected a section of the plant where products are processed, an area that typically has fewer employees on site. While firefighters managed to extinguish the majority of the flames by early evening, crews continued limited operations to ensure the fire was fully contained and to inspect the building's interior.
The Cedar Rapids plant is the world’s largest oat milling facility, processing more than 900,000 kilograms (approximately 2 million pounds) of oats daily. The cause of the explosion and subsequent fire remains under investigation.
