Qualcomm CEO reveals AI companies aim for 100B-parameter smartphone models by 2028

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has revealed that leading AI companies are seeking hardware capable of running 100-billion-parameter models continuously on smartphones by 2028. This shift suggests a move toward AI-native devices that function as autonomous agents rather than mere app launchers. However, significant engineering hurdles remain, particularly regarding memory and thermal management. Experts note that a 100-billion-parameter model, even when quantized to 4-bit, would require approximately 50GB of high-speed system memory, far exceeding current flagship capacities.

Separately, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan noted that Chinese AI models, including DeepSeek, Kimi, and GLM, are seeing rapid adoption due to their competitive performance and significantly lower token costs compared to Western models. This trend reflects a market shift where enterprises prioritize cost-to-performance ratios over absolute peak performance.

In the financial sector, DeepSeek is reportedly nearing a 100 billion yuan funding round, which would bring its pre-money valuation to approximately 500 billion yuan. The company is also reportedly preparing for a potential IPO on the STAR Market, targeting a listing by 2027.
