Qualcomm expands presence in Vietnam with AI R&D hub
Qualcomm is expanding its presence in Vietnam, aiming to establish its AI Research and Development center in the country as its third-largest global hub. This expansion follows a long-term research and integration process within the Vietnamese market.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyễn Đức Minh from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Qualcomm’s involvement grew from supplying chips to local smartphone and 5G manufacturers like Viettel, BKAV, and VinGroup. The company has since transitioned from sales to establishing technical support centers, recognizing the high capability of Vietnamese engineers.
A significant driver for this growth was Qualcomm’s acquisition of a 65% stake in Movian AI, a unit of VinGroup. With Vietnam’s data market projected to have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 10.8% to 11%, industry experts anticipate further developments, including the potential for chip design operations within the country.
