Qualcomm prepares Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 mobile processors

Qualcomm is preparing to launch its next generation of high-end mobile processors, reportedly featuring two variants: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. The upcoming series aims to segment the high-end market by offering a Pro model specifically designed for premium devices with advanced cooling systems.

Technical leaks indicate the Pro model may feature a CPU architecture capable of reaching clock speeds above 5 GHz. Early engineering samples have appeared on Geekbench, though performance results have shown some inconsistency due to unfinished firmware and thermal management issues during testing.

A major focus of the new architecture is the Hexagon NPU, which will include a new Element Accelerator. This component is designed to speed up Transformer model inference for on-device AI agents without significantly increasing power consumption. The NPU architecture also utilizes increased shared memory to manage KV-cache more efficiently and is optimized to support Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) AI models.
