Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series with 5GHz CPU
Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the high-performance Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, at the Snapdragon Summit 2026. Both chipsets are manufactured using a 2nm process by TSMC and feature the custom Oryon CPU architecture. A major milestone is the achievement of clock speeds reaching 5GHz on the Prime cores, marking the first time a mobile processor has crossed this threshold.
The new series is designed to usher in the ‘Agentic Age,’ shifting smartphones from app-centric tools to autonomous AI agent-centric platforms. The Extreme variant offers enhanced capabilities, including the ability to run AI models with up to 30 billion parameters locally. It also features an upgraded Hexagon NPU with an ‘Element Accelerator’ to speed up Transformer-based AI tasks, and an Adreno GPU with dedicated matrix cores for improved AI-driven graphics and frame generation.
Key differences between the two models include superior video capabilities in the Extreme version, which supports 8K video at 60fps and 4K at 240fps, and higher-performance memory. Major manufacturers such as Motorola, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo have confirmed plans to integrate these chips into their upcoming flagship devices.
