Qualicum Beach Council backs federal ferry funding and funds Mount Arrowsmith nature guide

The Qualicum Beach town council voted unanimously to support Courtenay‑Alberni MP Gord Johns’s campaign for long‑term operational funding for BC Ferries. Councilors argued that without additional federal support, fares could rise by at least 30 % by 2028 and service reductions could follow. Mayor Teunis Westbroek and Councillor Scott Harrison said the move would keep travel affordable for residents and visitors, benefiting local tourism.

In a separate motion, the council approved a one‑time $2,500 grant from its 2026 Community Volunteerism budget for the Arrowsmith Naturalists’ “Discover Nature – Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region” guide. The guide will showcase the region’s biodiversity, Indigenous culture and outdoor attractions, with copies distributed through visitor centres and local businesses. Proceeds from guide sales will fund nature‑based education programs in the Qualicum School District.
