Quang Ngai province addresses waste collection gaps

Quang Ngai province generates approximately 1,130 tons of domestic solid waste daily, but collection and treatment rates vary significantly by region. While urban areas achieve a collection rate of over 90%, the eastern region reaches about 65%, and the western mountainous areas reach only 52%.

Challenges in the western region include complex terrain and dispersed populations, with average collection distances ranging from 120 to 150 km, leading to high transportation costs. In areas lacking regular services, residents often resort to self-treating waste through composting, livestock feed, or selling recyclables. However, improper methods such as spontaneous burning or unauthorized burying in vacant lots, streams, and public areas pose risks of air, soil, and water pollution.

To address these issues, the province is working to expand collection networks in rural and mountainous areas and is researching new transfer stations to reduce costs. The Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee has directed the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to call for investors for two solid waste treatment complex projects in Duc Pho and Nghia Ky. Additionally, the province plans to implement a waste sorting program at the source for the 2026–2030 period and increase socialized investment in waste management services.
