Quang Ninh launches circular economy waste management project

The Quang Ninh Department of Agriculture and Environment, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam, has launched a project to promote a circular economy through integrated municipal solid waste management. Funded by the Norwegian government with a total budget of 420,000 USD, the initiative will run from June 2026 to June 2029.

The project aims to address challenges in Quang Ninh, where approximately 1,000 to 1,100 tons of municipal solid waste are generated daily. While collection rates exceed 99 percent, the city faces difficulties with source separation, recycling, and the increasing pressure on landfill capacities.

Key components of the pilot program include:

• Implementing source separation and specialized collection in the wards of Uong Bi, Yen Tu, and Hiep Hoa. • Establishing waste sorting stations to recover recyclable materials. • Piloting the co-processing of non-recyclable waste as alternative fuel in cement kilns. • Developing a comprehensive municipal solid waste management plan for the 2026–2030 period. • Creating a roadmap to reduce single-use plastic products.
