Quang Ninh Police warn of tax official impersonation scams

The Quang Ninh Economic Police have issued a warning to citizens, business households, and enterprises regarding a sophisticated scam involving individuals impersonating tax officials. Scammers often target businesses immediately after they have completed registration or updated information, calling them to claim that files are missing or require “data synchronization” or “electronic tax account authentication.”

To build trust, perpetrators use accurate business information and professional terminology to mimic real administrative procedures. They direct victims to fraudulent websites or applications that closely resemble official tax software. While these fake sites may use “gov” in their names to appear legitimate, they use “.com” domains rather than the official “gdt.gov.vn” domain used by the General Department of Taxation.

Once victims access these links or install the fake apps, scammers attempt to collect personal identification, scan chip-based citizen ID cards, perform facial recognition, and obtain bank account details. This allows criminals to monitor device operations and seize control of bank accounts to misappropriate assets. In some instances, scammers even demand that business owners transfer funds under the guise of payments calculated based on charter capital ratios.
