Anchorpoint plans retail HKD stablecoin launch with cautious approach
Anchorpoint, a joint venture between Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT, has announced plans to launch a retail-facing Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin. While the company previously indicated a retail offering could arrive as early as the end of 2026, CEO Dominic Maffei declined to confirm a specific timeline during a recent press conference, emphasizing a prudent and sustainable approach to market growth.
The venture follows the August release of its institutional stablecoin product. This development comes as competitor HSBC recently introduced its own HKD-backed RedCoin to its 3.3 million PayMe app users.
Anchorpoint aims to bridge traditional payment infrastructure with digital finance, focusing on regulated digital money for everyday payments and commercial applications. The company also noted the importance of public education and has established a Tokenised Money Adoption Programme to support research and discussion in the sector.
