Quanta Computer reportedly halted HP laptop production over cost dispute

Quanta Computer, a major Taiwanese contract manufacturer, reportedly halted the production of HP notebooks for approximately one week in September 2026 following a dispute over rising component costs. The standoff occurred when the two companies failed to reach an agreement regarding the price of parts purchased by the manufacturer, such as printed circuit boards, batteries, power management chips, and Wi-Fi modules.

Shipments resumed only after senior HP executives intervened to negotiate a cost adjustment that Quanta accepted. While HP directly manages the procurement of high-cost components like CPUs, GPUs, and RAM, the rising prices of secondary components created a financial strain for the supplier.

Industry analysts suggest the AI boom has shifted the power dynamic between manufacturers and clients. Quanta has significantly expanded its server production for AI data centers, a segment that now accounts for approximately 80 percent of its revenue. This growth in the AI infrastructure market provides the manufacturer with greater leverage and less dependency on traditional laptop orders compared to previous years.
