Quantico Iwo Jima memorial vandalized by former DACA recipient

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano has been charged with felony destruction of property, trespassing with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument following the vandalism of a World War II Iwo Jima memorial in Quantico, Virginia. On the evening of October 21, Soriano allegedly used a sledgehammer to decapitate one statue and damage the face of another. Local police estimate the damage to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Soriano, described by federal sources as an illegal alien and former DACA recipient whose status expired in August, was granted $2,500 bail by Prince William County Circuit Court Chief Judge Petula Metzler. This decision followed an objection from the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, which argued he should be held without bond. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer has been lodged against him.

Under Virginia law, intentional destruction of a qualifying veterans’ monument is a Class 6 felony when damage exceeds $1,000, carrying potential imprisonment of one to five years.
