Quantum astronomy drives industrial innovation in Canary Islands

The intersection of quantum astronomy and technological innovation is creating new economic opportunities and industrial applications. From September 8 to 10, an event in Tenerife, Canary Islands, will focus on the La Palma Quantum Interferometer (LPQI) project. This initiative aims to place Europe at the forefront of astronomical observation by combining scientific research with business potential.

Participants, including the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), will explore how advancements in high-precision observation can be transferred to other sectors. Key technologies being developed include single-photon detectors, artificial intelligence for data processing, and high-speed data transmission systems. These innovations, originally designed to detect extremely weak signals in space, have potential applications in defense, telecommunications, medicine, industrial manufacturing, and Earth observation.

To achieve higher precision, researchers are utilizing adaptive optics, deformable mirrors, and advanced sensors to compensate for atmospheric interference and temperature changes. This technological race is fostering a specialized market for photonics, sensors, and advanced engineering, driving economic growth and qualified employment.
