Quantum computing advances through commercial growth and technical breakthroughs

Advancements in quantum computing are being marked by both commercial developments and significant scientific breakthroughs. Rigetti Computing has reported a 185% increase in second-quarter sales, though total revenue remains at approximately $5.1 million. CEO Subodh Kulkarni stated that the company is working toward reaching quantum advantage in roughly three years, noting that commercial revenue is still in its early stages. Rigetti is currently expanding collaborations, including work with Hewlett Packard and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to develop hybrid quantum-classical supercomputers.

In a separate scientific milestone, researchers led by Marcello Benedetti and Harry Buhrman of Quantinuum successfully demonstrated a quantum system's ability to outperform classical computers in a specific task. Using a trapped-ion quantum system, the team utilized a game based on complement sampling to address the quantum verification problem. The experiment showed that as the task difficulty increased, the quantum system's performance exceeded the mathematically proven limits of classical computation, widening the gap between the two technologies.
