Quantinuum and Oracle partner to integrate Helios quantum computer into OCI

Quantinuum and Oracle have announced a multi-year strategic partnership to integrate quantum computing into Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). Through this alliance, OCI customers will gain direct access to Helios, Quantinuum’s 98-qubit trapped-ion quantum computer, which is being deployed in a dedicated AI data center in the United States. The collaboration aims to support enterprise applications, academic research, and scientific discovery in fields such as drug discovery, material science, and financial modeling by combining quantum, AI, and high-performance computing.

Helios utilizes a quantum charge-coupled device (QCCD) architecture, which physically moves charged particles between storage and calculation zones to reduce interference and enable real-time error correction. While this represents a significant technical leap, experts note that millions of qubits will be required for full-scale scientific utility.

In Europe, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has launched six new calls for quantum computing projects with a total budget of 40 million euros. These initiatives aim to advance leadership in trapped-ion and superconducting technologies, targeting the development of full-stack systems with over 1,000 physical qubits accessible via the cloud.

Concurrently, researchers at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) have identified a potential obstacle in adiabatic quantum computing known as the quantum Zeno effect. This phenomenon can potentially stall calculation processes as the number of qubits increases, presenting a new challenge for scaling quantum hardware.
