Quantum computing and AI agentic finance drive digital shifts
The intersection of emerging technologies and financial systems is being shaped by advancements in quantum computing and artificial intelligence. While quantum computing has long been theorized as a threat to global encryption, current progress remains hindered by “quantum noise” and the extreme engineering requirements needed to stabilize qubits near absolute zero. If realized, quantum machines utilizing Shor’s algorithm could theoretically compromise public-key cryptography by calculating prime factors exponentially faster than conventional supercomputers, potentially exposing private keys in decentralized networks.
Simultaneously, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is promoting the concept of “AiFi,” or agentic finance. This vision anticipates a future where AI agents, which will eventually outnumber humans, require programmable money to operate. Because AI software cannot satisfy traditional banking requirements like identity verification, Armstrong argues that cryptocurrency provides the necessary financial rails. To support this, Coinbase is developing infrastructure such as the x402 payment protocol, which allows AI agents to execute automated payments using stablecoins like USDC to access data or computing power without human intervention.
