Quantinuum sets quantum error correction record with Helios system

Quantinuum has announced a major breakthrough in quantum error correction using its Helios trapped-ion system. The company reported achieving a logical memory fidelity of 99.9995%, which equates to just five uncorrectable errors per million operations.

This performance represents a 100-fold improvement over the best published results from competing hardware technologies, such as Google Quantum AI's superconducting systems. Quantinuum also noted that this result is ten times lower than its own previous record set in September 2026. The company utilized a color code technique, observing that each increase in code distance reduced logical errors by an average factor of 12.

CEO Rajeeb Hazra stated that the results prove the company possesses the necessary error-correction architecture and trapped-ion technology to achieve universal fault-tolerance. This milestone is considered a key step toward the development of Apollo, Quantinuum's planned universal fault-tolerant quantum computer, which is targeted for launch by 2029.

While the achievement is a significant milestone for scalable quantum computing, experts note it is a benchmark for error correction rather than a demonstration of a large-scale, general-purpose quantum computer. The results suggest that fault-tolerant computing may be achievable with significantly fewer physical qubits than previously estimated.
