Quantum computing firms secure major funding for fault-tolerant hardware

Quantum computing firms Oratomic and Universal Quantum have secured significant new funding to advance the development of utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum systems.

California-based Oratomic has raised $775 million to accelerate the construction of quantum computers using reconfigurable arrays of neutral atoms. This approach aims to move beyond theoretical designs toward functional hardware. The company’s investor group includes Bezos Expeditions, Lowercarbon Capital, Bain Capital, Formation, and Nebular.

In the United Kingdom, Sussex spinout Universal Quantum has raised over $100 million in a Series A round, which the company describes as the largest ever for a UK-headquartered quantum firm. Co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, the funding will be used to link trapped-ion chips into larger machines. Investors in the round include EDBI, Artal, and Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki.
