Quantum computing promises to transform scientific research

Quantum computing is poised to transform scientific research by utilizing the laws of quantum physics to study the microscopic world more efficiently. Unlike traditional computers that use bits (0 or 1), quantum computers use qubits, which can represent a combination of both states simultaneously. Talia Gershon, IBM’s Vice President and Head of Quantum Operations, compares this to a spinning coin that is neither strictly heads nor tails while in motion.

This technology allows scientists to simulate complex systems, such as molecular structures, by virtually manipulating atoms to observe chemical bond behavior. Such capabilities could significantly accelerate advancements in drug development, chemistry, and materials science. While current quantum hardware remains limited in scale, the technology aims to reduce the cost and time required for laboratory experimentation.

In recognition of the field's impact, the United Nations has declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, marking a century since the formulation of quantum mechanics.
