Quantum computing: Qosmos Technology sets record as NEC halts hardware development
Beijing-based startup Qosmos Technology, founded by a Tsinghua University research team, has achieved a world record in neutral atom quantum computing by stably capturing 11,000 atoms. This surpasses the previous record of 6,100 atoms held by the California Institute of Technology. The company utilizes a proprietary ultra-low temperature rubidium atom array platform and has recently secured several billion yen in Series A funding led by Legend Capital to support R&D and manufacturing.
In contrast, Japanese technology firm NEC has reportedly ceased the development of its physical quantum computer hardware as of late March. While NEC was a pioneer in realizing superconducting qubits in 1999, the company has decided to pivot away from hardware development due to high costs and the lack of a definitive standard for practical implementation. NEC will continue to pursue research in quantum mechanics, while Fujitsu remains a leading figure in Japan's quantum computing efforts.
