Quantum computing sector shows commercial growth and new ETF options
The quantum computing sector is showing signs of increasing commercialization and investor interest. Analysts have identified significant upside potential for companies like Quantum Computing Inc. and Quantinuum following second-quarter earnings. Industry data indicates that over 300 organizations globally are now engaging with quantum technology, with many large companies allocating substantial capital toward integration and use-case development.
Commercial momentum is evident in the revenue streams of sector players. D-Wave Quantum reported that its commercial revenue reached 62.4% of its second-quarter total, while IonQ reported that 60% of its revenue came from commercial customers. Additionally, the Defiance Quantum ETF saw a rally of over 51% during the second quarter.
In Australia, investors have gained new exposure to the sector through the listing of the VanEck Quantum ETF (ASX: QNTM). The fund tracks the MarketVector Quantum Computing Ecosystem Index, which includes companies involved in quantum hardware, software, and component supply. While the sector offers high growth potential, it remains characterized by volatility and a lack of widespread material revenue, with much of the current value tied to patents and research expectations.
