Quantum computing sees breakthroughs in qubit placement and fidelity
Researchers at Florida State University have developed a new chip design to address the challenge of reliable qubit construction in quantum computing. The method utilizes magnetic levitation to precisely position single electron qubits above a solid neon surface. This approach aims to replace the previous reliance on random chance and surface defects with a controlled, scalable architecture where qubits are “built by design” rather than found by chance.
In the commercial sector, IonQ has reported significant growth and technical milestones. The company announced it achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, becoming the first quantum computing firm to cross the “four-nines” benchmark. This was achieved using proprietary Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) technology. Additionally, IonQ has expanded its operations by acquiring a major US-owned chip foundry, positioning itself as a vertically integrated quantum computing company.
