Quantum computing technology and its impact on security and optimization
Quantum computing utilizes qubits, which leverage principles of superposition and entanglement to process information differently than classical bits. While classical bits are limited to 0 or 1, qubits can represent multiple states simultaneously, allowing for the parallel testing of vast combinations of data.
Practical applications and security implications are already emerging. To combat the threat of future quantum computers breaking current encryption—a strategy known as ‘harvest now, decrypt later’—organizations like NIST have released post-quantum cryptography standards. Major tech companies have already begun implementing these protections, including Signal, Apple for iMessage, and Google Chrome.
Beyond security, quantum technology is being explored for complex optimization problems. Companies such as Volkswagen have tested quantum algorithms for route optimization in urban transit. While classical computers currently remain competitive for many tasks, industries are actively developing quantum-ready formulations for logistics, shipping, and pharmaceutical research.
