Quantum magnetic sensor market projected for rapid growth
The global quantum magnetic sensor market is experiencing rapid growth driven by breakthroughs in quantum coherence and expanding industrial and medical applications. The technology is primarily divided into two systems: room-temperature Optically Pumped Magnetometers (OPM) and Diamond Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) magnetometers.
OPM technology, which includes SERF models, allows for high-sensitivity magnetic field measurement without the need for cryogenic cooling. Meanwhile, NV sensors utilize diamond-based optical detection to enable nanoscale magnetic measurements. These technologies are moving beyond laboratory settings into practical fields such as wearable brain imaging (MEG), geophysical exploration, defense, unexploded ordnance (UXO) mapping, and non-destructive testing.
Market analysis indicates that as OPM arrays begin to replace some SQUID use cases and photonic NV sensors advance nanoscale mapping, the sector is expected to see steady double-digit growth. Challenges remain regarding magnetic shielding, calibration, and the cost of diamond microdevices. Looking toward 2025, programs such as DARPA’s RoQS aim to further harden quantum magnetic sensors for use in real-world environments.
